Beijing: Day 1 - The Great Wall

We headed to Beijing for a long weekend of sightseeing in China's capitol city! This is part one of our many adventures/photos...
It all started in the Hong Kong airport, where Finn loved the wide open space and big bars to climb in!
Peekaboo!
Then we settled in for the 3 hour flight with Elmo. Finn was quite comfortable, and luckily a not-full flight afforded us a little space to stretch.
We arrived late on Thursday PM, then headed out Friday AM to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall of China. It's a little further out, but worth the extra drive, as the "Badaling" section is apparently overrun with more tourists. (Note - we are not actually standing in front of the Great Wall in this picture! Just a large stone wall talking about the world's largest stone wall.)
The Wall loomed ahead from the village below...
Got to put on sunscreen! We took a cable car to the top of the Wall.
Finally! Here we are - such a breathtaking place. We loved that there weren't many people there, it gave it an even more awe-inspiring feel. Note the haze in the background - we were struck by how hazy (and hot) it was in the Beijing area...
Finn and Daddy head down the Wall...looks like we're going to fall off the edge of the World!
A great view of the watchtowers speckling the horizon...
Curtis was with us the whole weekend for the tour, and we all had fun hiking over history.
Finn and Mommy take in the sights!
The Wall was a bit wider than I imagined, and has been very well preserved/restored.
Finn loved to "JUMP!" down the stairs...luckily, most of our walk was downhill...people going in the opposite direction were not having nearly as much fun as us!
Finn starts to get sleepy in the heat...
While it was very hazy, you could still see the Wall snaking over the hills as far as the eye could see.
Finn fell asleep, but the hike continues!
Finally we reached the end of the section. At the end, you could take a tobaggon ride on a steel tube! For 3 bucks, you get your own sled and shoot to the bottom!
Erin at the bottom of the ride, with Finn still sleeping soundly.
After all of that hiking, we had built up quite an appetite. Our tour guide took us to a great local Szechuan restaurant...yum.
It was a great first half of the day, and we had just begun the trip...
Next time: Ming Tombs and the Birds Nest!
Love,
A&E

What an amazing experience! Your photos really capture the grandeur of The Wall, I think. (Can't believe how much Curtis looks like a younger Pete.)
